Thread: Nvidia resolution settings - no can save
no doubt, may have been addressed (in part) within forum, guess i'm having problems locating 'fix' easily...
yes, relative 'noobs' re: ubuntu linux (jaunty jackelope), although we're 'fairly capable' regards hardware (normally) under windows...
appreciate need 'go elsewhere' o.s. since windows becoming more of problem it's seemingly worth....
since 'noobs', guess need 'guidance' in how save our resolution settings nvidia geforce mx4000 video card (and since linux has reputation working 'older hardware', our thought use old workstation 'test bed').
system msi km400 mobo 1 gb ram, 'dedicated' 80 gb ide hard disk solely ubuntu (dual booting xp pro 80gb disk), sony dvd-r/w, , aformentioned nvidia mx4000 (64 mb single vga w/ s-video output).
originally, ubuntu system installed using onboard s3 video, had problems getting 800 x 600 grabbed mx 4000 'off shelf'..
have single monitor (crt) connected vga , want run 1024 x 768 resolution, drivers using (envy) 'default' 800 x 600 , can't seem 'save' changes using 'manufacturers controls' (ubuntu message when alter video settings).
when choose 'save settings', 'usual' message re: unable parse xconf... must mean not have rights 'overwrite' "system protected" file (xorg.conf ) - correct?.
what's 'secret' in how save new resolution settings? we've tried "sudo nvidia-config" inside of terminal - we've tried "sudo nvidia-settings"...
moved , renamed xconfig - still same error.
doing wrong, here?
(and thought knew hardware... hmph..)
specific instructions noobs, y'know..?
are prompted password when open nvidia settings?
if not, hit alt+f2 , enter
then shoudl able save , use "save x configuration" button.code:gksu nvidia-settings
can edit launcher nvidia-settings use command above if need use often.
"unable parse" may mean file has bad contents. if absolutely needed, can reset default running command in terminal:
after though, have reinstall restricted drivers , reboot before continuing.code:sudo dpkg-reconfigure -p high xserver-xorg
luck
