Trouble with the parallel programmer

hello

it's first time trying use atmega168 no pre-burned bootloader.
i read stuff online , made own parallel programmer.

i connected duemilanove using 6 icsp pins, can't program it.

tried arduino software, avrdude, pony prog... of them telling me cannot find device.
the yellow led (l) on board on while cable plugged , flashes once when click "burn bootloader" in arduino, after i'm getting error.


the error message

"avrdude: avr device not responding
avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
avrdude: yikes! invalid device signature.
avrdude: expected signature atmega168 1e 94 06"

i checked options using "parallel programmer" , "arduino diecimila or duemilanove w/ atmega168" board in tools menu.


can me?
i need kinda urgent



forgot mention... board connected @ 12v power supply while trying burn bootloader

Crossfader Arduino Tutorial

hello i'm super newb please don't bash me much. i'm using led's , i've connected them correctly (finally) , wondering why program here ( http://www.arduino.cc/en/tutorial/colorcrossfader ) doesn't work? say's haven't declared crossfade. read directions on top , said crossfade needs used list order of colors. isn't declared in main part (void loop() )? or need declared before? nevermind void on bottom , needed before voidloop. lol anyways playing rgb led's wondering if has specific way of making them fade in , out different colors?
