Heartbeat from Arduino to PC via wire, how?

i want tests on battery life various parameters. plan set device code specific experiment , let run until dies out. how know when dies?

i want let computer log in 1 way or another. really, new in bear me :)

this equipment:
* usb serial, "3.3v ftdi basic", sparkfun.com
* arduino fio

i see following possibilities, don't know if possible:
1) connecting ftdi 6 pins on fio, when uploading code. somehow have fio send heartbeat via this.
2) connecting digital port on fio pin on ftdi using small wire. have fio send heartbeat on digital out , have pc listen on virtual serial port.

in either case, use advice me started :)

thanks, velle

how debug code on arduino? way connect ftdi arduino, then.

will arduino measuring battery voltage? if not, doing? arduino powered battery being abused?

there few details in post offer real suggestions.
