Problem when expanding on the ShifOut tutorial for LEDs

i've expanded tutorial http://arduino.cc/en/tutorial/shiftout use around 90 leds using multiple 74hc595's instead of 2 in example. don't use capacitor though.
i can blink code example http://arduino.cc/en/tutorial/shftout22 work if disconnect shift register clock pin jumper going 2nd chip 3rd chip noted red line in image below. when disconnected, leds blink in unrecognizable pattern way down board. there aspect of original code stops working @ when wired more 2 chips? think code problem or wiring problem? i've double checked wiring , seems fine.

can define "works" me? works if disconnect wire, "the leds blink in unrecognizable pattern way down board". doesn't work? happens wire connected, exactly?
