Thread: Advice pls on multiple HDD setup with LVM

i building first linux server using ubuntu 8.04 , appreciate advice on best options lvm config of 3 ide drives available deployment (1 x 40gb, 2 x 125gb: sda, sdb, sdc respectively).

box serve webapps in our small office network (<50 users), running vmware server 2 host ubuntu 9.04 , win2k3 guest oss.

implementation using old retired equipment. being used demonstrate proof of concept before purchasing new tin.

our first linux implementation, , hence there trepidation due lack of experience in environment.

migration bring existence range of new apps business use, difficult know our data needs potentially be. reason why lvm seems right approach.

following have mapped out hdd config:

device , partitions
sda1 primary 150mb ext3 /boot
sda# logical 39gb lvm
sdb1 primary 125gb lvm
sdc1 primary 125gb lvm

logical volume groups , devices
1. system-sda
logical volumes
swap (3gb)
ii root (10gb)
iii tmp (10gb)
iv usr (15g)

2. data-sdb-sdc
logical volumes
srv (50gb)
ii opt (5gb)
iii var (50gb)
iv home (10gb)

rationale above separate system , static data volatile/dynamic.

value feedback , suggestions.

sda1 primary 150mb ext3 /boot

journal on /boot serves waste space.

safer have 200mb of space on /boot well.

sda1 primary 200mb ext2 /boot
