Replacement/Substitution for the Sharp GP2Y0A700K IR distance sensor...?

for while i've known sensor obsolete , impossible find; nobody carries it, , whatever happened ones produced - well, guess must in use. check out comparison table here:

http://www.acroname.com/robotics/info/articles/sharp/sharp.html

(note, have no affiliation acroname)

while quite bulky compared other sensors, "see" distance, triple max distance can next best sensor.

so happened? why did stop making it? applications used it; supposed when need replacement?

so far, thing close cheap enough ultrasonic sensor of sort (likely close senscomp/polaroid 6500 series, or maybe maxbotix, hexamite, etc). wonder comparison of beam spread between two, noise on return, etc.

there such gap needs filled long-range distance sensor doesn't cost arm/leg (closest far parallax laser distance sensor; neato xv-11 lidar sensor)...

i found @ least 1 reference 710k0f being successor 700k:

http://www.sharpsme.com/optoelectronics/sensors/distance-measuring-sensors/gp2y0a710k0f

it has max range of 5m (about 16 feet).  it's shown in production "not sold in united states"... suspect patent conflict.
