FIO w/ XBEE won't reset or upload new programs

i following error when uploading fio: avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00

it problem has gotten worse on time, , won't go away.  rss light on shield continually blinks, on 5 sec , off 1. 

the radios still communicating because serial.println text previous program continues feed through serial monitor.  when booting lights on shield , fio turn on/flicker stop on shield , rssi blinks on , off.

anybody have solution or explanation?

have tried upload new program in fio, without xbee , using usb cable?

Crossfader Arduino Tutorial

hello i'm super newb please don't bash me much. i'm using led's , i've connected them correctly (finally) , wondering why program here ( http://www.arduino.cc/en/tutorial/colorcrossfader ) doesn't work? say's haven't declared crossfade. read directions on top , said crossfade needs used list order of colors. isn't declared in main part (void loop() )? or need declared before? nevermind void on bottom , needed before voidloop. lol anyways playing rgb led's wondering if has specific way of making them fade in , out different colors?
