Thread: cutting out a hand-drawn pattern in gimp

hey guys, working gimp on first project here , wasnt able figure out: want cut out image tree, , leave rest of image white (clear nice, intend put image) background. know how draw lasso around it, telling program have selected region, crop tool seems accept square regions. how do this?

further info, if can suggest way this, trying cut out tree 1 image , put another. thanks!

i hope understand question.

i've tried this, , works follows:-
- select "free select" tool
- press & hold left mouse button while drawing around object
- when starting point, release mouse button (the selected area should enclosed dashed line)
- select menu edit > copy
- open second image file or create new blank image
- select menu edit > paste into

pasted image selected, outer rectangular selection box (which allows move around).

may have been selecting object going menu image > crop selection. give rectangular selected area, not want.
