3.5 mm audio jack - question about output level - Raspberry Pi Forums

tl;dr version: 3.5 mm audio jack line-level output or headphone-level output?

longer version: i'm starting cassette label out of living room. had idea use rpi audio server, make tapes order. i'd have raspberry pi connected tape deck 3.5mm-to-rca "y" cable.

theoretically load side on rpi, set tape deck record, , same side b little later. little tv got local second-hand shop, it'd perfect setup occupy bare minimum of space.

if audio signal coming out of rpi hot (say, hot enough drive set of headphones), i'm going wind distorted sound (and possibly fried equipment). i'd need either find compatible external sound card line-level output, or figure out how throttle down audio out on rpi itself.

on front? in advance.

the audio output 1v peak-to-peak maximum.
it's low-level headphones (according reports - i've not tried)

professional line-level 0db -or was, when first thought of - 1mw 600Ω, means 0.775v rms or 1.09v peak, 2.18v p-p
need headroom, , setting zero-level 18db below digital maximum means kit should handle 10v p-p

line-level means in domestic equipment variable.
also, many (all i've come across) cassette recorders have automatic gain control (agc), handle variability.

call line-level, , try it. can play level on pi, prevent clipping if it's loud.

you'll disappointed result.
3.5mm audio out approx. 11-bit quality, better cassette recorder capable of.
also, agc screws quality, adding noise quiet bits , clipping sudden peaks.

1 question - can still cassette tapes?
