MHz Speed Analog Reading + High Quality 40kHz Square Wave

i have idea optical alignment tool requires high-resolution distance sensor. thought maybe achieve ultrasound transducers, looking @ travel time sender receiver. idea straightforward, catch need sampling 40khz sine wave @ minimum of 3mhz resolution required. peeked around bit, , got impression fastest arduino can sample analog signal 10khz. don't need data streaming or in real time--i need send pulse, time precisely, @ reaction creates in receiver (sampled @ 3mhz), , send data arduino or computer processing. i've included extremely scientific diagram show in visual form:

can external components buffer data , send arduino @ speed can handle? there other electronic solutions should considering entirely?

10khz limit arduino unless want go off-piste, when higher speeds lower resolutions possible.
comparators , zero-crossing detectors can useful techniques higher resolution ultrasonics, can external high speed clocks.
