Can't upload larger sketch to mega2560 using windows

hello all,
i need help. i'm having problems uploading using winxp or 2003, on linux can upload fine. i'm using arduino-1.0 on 3 os's. symptom upload hangs indefinitely. no error messages, no joy. can upload number of samples , smaller sketches , work fine, production sketch of 36742 bytes not upload. if comment out of code, it'll upload. need code! i've checked !!!, not problem. other thing can tell while watching leds while uploading, see tx , rx leds both go blinking not blinking momentarily, rx led goes out, followed tx led. avrdude hangs indefinitely @ point , has killed. i've tried of solutions posted other users, such replacing avr tools version 0022, no joy. replaced "mega25602560.upload.protocol=stk500v2" "...=wiring", no joy. don't have clue else try.

do have large number of strings in program. e.g.
serial.print("lots , lot of these?");

on second thought, if uploads on linux may not problem.

Crossfader Arduino Tutorial

hello i'm super newb please don't bash me much. i'm using led's , i've connected them correctly (finally) , wondering why program here ( http://www.arduino.cc/en/tutorial/colorcrossfader ) doesn't work? say's haven't declared crossfade. read directions on top , said crossfade needs used list order of colors. isn't declared in main part (void loop() )? or need declared before? nevermind void on bottom , needed before voidloop. lol anyways playing rgb led's wondering if has specific way of making them fade in , out different colors?
