2560 Mega upload problem (using FTDI Friend breakout board USB connection)

i purchased arduino mega 2560, , ftdi friend (breakout board) cable, , trying program arduino simple blink sketch (running on mac os x).  arduino being powered through usb cable, usb port on macbook pro.  i'm getting following errors when try upload , run sketch:

binary sketch size: 1602 bytes (of 258048 byte maximum)
avrdude: stk500v2_receivemessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_receivemessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_receivemessage(): timeout

i've got wired follows:

ftdi            mega 2560

gnd     <->    gnd (next 5v)
vcc     <->    5v
tx      <->    rx0
rx      <->    tx0

the arduino boots up.

i've checked board settings in software.  it's set arduino mega 2560
the serial port set /dev/cu.usbserial-a401887z  (i got terminal).
the baud rate 9600 (i tried higher speed, didn't seem make difference).

the programmer setting on avrisp mkll, assume correct. (?)

i've installed latest driver ftdi.  ftdi device shows in system info, , serial port info present in sketch when usb cable plugged in (so i'm pretty sure driver working correctly).  also, little led on ftdi friend blinks every time error message (like shown above) written console.

i've tried using tty setting (/dev/tty.usbserial-a401887z), doesn't seem make difference.

at point, usb/serial communication doesn't seem working, , i'm unable sketch upload successfully.

anybody have experience combination of devices, or have suggestions on might wrong?  have wired correctly?

thanks.
