FIXED: File Association Problem When Upgrading Arduino to 1.0 on Windows
passing along in case others have had issue when upgrading arduino on windows platforms:
i've been upgrading machines arduino-0022 arduino 1.0. after upgrading, had issues .ino file association in windows, both xp , win7 64bit. after installing 1.0 changed file association point arduino.exe in arduino-1.0 folder. my preferred method browsing , opening arduino files through win explorer, opening via double clock on source file. but after upgrade , updating .ino file association point arduino 1.0 .exe, double clicking win explorer continued open arduino-0022 ide.
some searching led me -> http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/problems-with-file-association-in-windows-7-64-bit/8a84fcec-22df-4942-8e35-d98dbe96e327 it appears arduino not register when upgraded, after initial key established in win registry.
after saving restore point, used regedit navigate computer\hkey_classes_root\applications, , finding arduino.exe navigated shell>open>command. in default changed location point correct location of 1.0 arduino.exe executable (it still pointing old -0022 arduino.exe location), hit okay , reassociated ,ino file type normal. it worked.
the linked post above win7 fix worked win7 , winxp machines.

also, fix came across. to fix multiple instances of com port numbers single arduino board on win7:

1. modify environment variable permanently hidden display 'phantom' devices in device manager. under start, right-click computer > properties > advanced system settings > advanced tab > environment variables @ bottom. click new , put devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices in variable name , put 1 in variable value , ok way out.
2. under start, right click computer > properties > device manager. toggle show hidden devices on under view menu. you should see hidden installed devices listed if not plugged in.
process similar under xp, set environment variable 1 , make sure view toggled on in device manager. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315539

if computer doesn't recognize arduino , won't install proper drivers, fix may work. has been used arduino uno windows 7 64-bit, steps may vary other devices , operating systems.
1) go "unknown device" arduino.
2) click around in "hardware" tab open window "update driver" button on it. click it.
3) choose option find driver list on computer. choose "let me pick list of device drivers on computer".
4) scroll down , choose "ports".
5) choose "arduino llc" , "arduino uno". if there no "arduino llc" option, follow steps below:
a) click "have disk" button.
b) point arduino folder, "drivers" folder, select .inf file particular device (in case arduino uno.inf).
6) install driver. ignore warning messages verification of publication.
7) arduino should listed com port instead of unknown device. in ide click tools > serial port , select new com port.
