you change display number why?
when 1 runs x-window server on local work station (reflexion, cygwin, linux) display set
{host-name/ip-address}.y. x.y 0.0, , in general reflects first display , first window on x-window server.
[ x-window server machine has keyboard, mouse , screen] [x-window client running software, xterm, emacs, remote application etc] (in many cases, server , client run on same machine)
unless, have display waiting show client output, changing display number same terminating program. (strictly speaking, using nohup or otherwise disassociating program display, permit program continue running when display disappears or changes)
default linux workstations have 7 virtual consoles (alt-f1 - alt-f7) standard graphic display show on virtual console 7 , associated :0.0. possible run x on virtual console well. display console 0:1 or 0:2 selected software
reflection (an x-window software package nt, xp et.al.) has ability set display value part of configuration)
software have {host}:0.3 display value show on virtual screen associated display 3.
[[ background: in deep-dark reaches of ancient history, unix-linux workstations have multiple screens or terminals associated each server, multi-user os. each graphic window have seperate display value. graphic crt's, lcd have multiple virtual instances.
x:y meant $x physical screen , $y virtual screen on physical address
should presumed once x server starts, set of distinct x:y values available use fixed , not change.
if 1 needed switch display's because value {host} change not x:y value
example of changing display number, in emacs/xemacs there option opening new frame on different display. once session new display has been established, prior frame on original display value can changed while program still runnning
