Compile kernel or modules for NOOBS/BerryBoot Raspbian? - Raspberry Pi Forums

i'm experimenting raspbian running under noobs (which gather based on berryboot), , want use kernel module (appletalk) isn't enabled default. however, when compile (using cross-compile on x86 machine, including rest of kernel , modules), "exec format error" , when try modprobe, -f, dmesg tells me "appletalk: no symbol version module_layout".

raw image install of raspbian, same compiled module works fine. noticed kernel version under noobs 3.6.11-rpi-aufs, different raw raspbian's 3.6.11+, went looking around , gather berryboot provides own custom kernel.

leads me question: possible compile berryboot kernel, or modules it? couldn't find reference having done it, or guidance of other kind. (and if that's case, doesn't suggest noobs-managed raspbian has more limited hardware expansion possibilities, if can't compile drivers?)
