Thread: Network Manager Gnome clobbered?

i ran across major noob gotacha yesterday
attempted try rt kernel 2.6.29 on dell studio 15 , found wireless didn't work.

thought i'd try out different network manager, 'wicd'. didn't realize installing overwrite network manager gnome , network manager installed.
tested wicd, found wasn't able connect (here's big mistake) un-installed it.

left me without wireless on dell studio 15 , of course no way connect repository reinstall nmg , nm. wasn't able install or find either package on 9.04 cdrom/dvd - though added cdrom repository list , unchecked online repos. different rathole , chose not go down.

after searching online (using backup ubuntu netbook) found person had done same thing , followed links posted needed nmg , nm packages here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/net/

downloaded network manager gnome , network manager packages usb stick, sneaker-netted them dell studio 15, dragged them desktop , used gdebi package installer install both.

rebooted , normal.

think serious enough gotcha developers should consider fixing in way...maybe script prevents or @ least warns un-installing network manager result in loss of connectivity?

anyway, wanted share experience others.
hope helps someone!
