Practical Limits of Serial communications?

hi everyone,
as may have read elsewhere, grappling implementing rs485 on arduino platform using hardware serial ports on 1284p , 328p. wondering if over-complicating matters... whether doesn't make more sense stick serial communications between arduinos , drop rs485 altogether. folk @ openenergy project showing akin, i.e. using  74ahc125 driver chips isolate arduinos serial line until needed - not unlike rs485 chips, mind you.

what other options should considering line sets shorter 50' , multiple arduinos?

entire books can (and have been) written on subject when there few constraints.  question not unlike one: "how can best travel 5 miles?  need make 3 stops."  if route through suburban neighborhoods foot, bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, , car reasonable choices.  if route through rugged mountainous terrain, none of choices reasonable.

start these constraints: communications cable pass through electrically noisy areas?  large motors or fluorescent lights along path?

will communications cable pass between buildings?  cable need electrically isolated?  protected lighting?
