Arduino Robot for Beginner

so may little bit ambitious here, , please tell me if think am. beginner arduino, know little stands though still learning. however, feel i'm not learning book using because not suit learning method. month or have been reading , learning arduino this book. has helped me grasp things want start more entertaining project , learn more arduino in process.

what have been thinking trying build own robot. nothing on top, beginners first robot or that. want program 100% myself, want put myself, have not had experience kind of thing before. hoping use internet tutorials, , these forums, me during process. hopes learn lot more using arduino in process, , come out cool robot too!

here want in robot, , please tell me if sounds complicated beginner:

preferably walker (bipedal, qudruped, etc. doesn't matter which) i'll tracks or wheels if it's more feasible.
able controlled via remote.

thats it!

now, still need information start project. have arduino uno other components going looking for? have $125 spend, seem feasible budget? there crucial think should read on before attempting build arduino controlled robot? if project sound ambitious beginner, recommend in terms of helping me learn enough build robot?

with said, forward responses. thanks!

wheels infinitely easier , cheaper implement walking robot be; beginner project, two-wheeled differential steered "turtle" style desk robot ideal; use continuous rotation servos; in fact go here, buy robot kit, parts, , book (which teach waaay more small arduino robotics) , expand there:

http://www.amazon.com/robot-builders-bonanza-gordon-mccomb/dp/0071750363/
http://www.budgetrobotics.com/
http://www.robotoid.com/

you'll need chassis, servos, wheels - plus sensors (maybe third servo mount either infrared or ultrasonic distance sensor on can "pan" around).

able controlled via remote.

once basic chassis rolling under control, can adding ir remote control receiver , hooking arduino, , use tv remote control or similar control (once decode remote codes, of course).

there other options, of course, using ir may simpler set - feel free around other methods, though!

i think small robot possible build, , budget more enough; keeping desktop style robot keep costs down, while not taking lot of space. go trying hack old toy r/c car, outside experience level (though bit cheaper, not much). go standard hobby r/c car (which uses servo control signals - easy generate servo library), such chassis can exceed budget. think robot chassis 1 above place start.

note ardbot goes along book gordon mccomb, , series of articles has written servo magazine on robot (if don't have subscription it, might consider it!); great place start!
