Thread: GUI backup solution?
hello. while getting better bash, still don't know as i'd to. therefore, i'd ask gui backup solutions.
i've reviewed few, such flyback, backula, rsnapshot, , timevault. i've read, backula extremely advanced system admins, , timevault may not work laptops needing external (usb, network, etc) storage.
anyway, partitions on both desktop & laptop follows:
desktop = ubuntu 9.04windows
ubuntu
storage (docs, music, vids, etc)
laptop = ubuntu studio 8.10
run backups laptop desktop, think may remove windows desktop & use all-purpose server.
have different schedules different folders, such as:
/media/storage/documents #every night
/media/storage/projectfiles #once week
/media/storage/audio #once month
/media/storage/video #once month
also, i'd possibility of doing on ethernet or wireless, , check files integrity/validity/whatev. basically, see if md5 sums equal of original source data. i've done few drag & drop copies in past when didn't know corrupted copies, , i've ended few music albums read 0 bytes, few other items, , i'd make sure doesn't happen again.
i'd schedule takes daily documents , stores them in folders either numbered 0-6/1-7 or labeled "sunday - saturday" have different backup each day. finally, every week documents folder daily sub-folders renamed "last" week, i'd have 1 week of backups @ least, 2 weeks @ most, depending on when during week.
that, might able write script did same thing windows backup @ location used work.
oh, , 1 more thing: i've seen of these backup solutions compress files or otherwise make them unusable.
i'm thinking maybe in addition being backup laptop, use desktop media streaming computer xbox, others' laptops, etc can browse media, want able make uncompressed regularly readable format.
suggestions? sorry immense amount of text! help.![]()
