Thread: Cannot boot after removing partition with GParted

i removed unused partition 1 of drives, can no longer boot. grub gives me error 22, presumably because can no longer find partition deleted. have had boot ubuntu startup cd. have tried running grub under startup cd, cannot seem see drive configuration.

have 2 hard drives on scsi. first 1 has windows xp installed on second has ubuntu 9.04.

starting grub on ubuntu startup cd can issue root (hd0,0), point @ windows drive, if try issue root (hd1,0) point @ ubuntu partition drive not found. issued find command under grub, couldn't find configuration files, makes sense since files on over (hd1,0), cannot issue root command for.

failing understand how grub set up. of course did not install grub, done ubuntu installation, don't know set up.

it entirely possible did delete install gparted, grub on other disk. here scenario happen (and has happened me in past)

install on 1 drive in computer
use while, new drive
install new os using both disks

1 of few terrible things happen
nuke old 1 gparted, didn't realize grub still on it, , can't boot new drive

nuke new old drive, accidentally installed os on instead of new drive, because of wire put (ie, didn't check disk sizes when did install)

or few other fun combos, bottom line is, pop in live disk, see if have files on either of drives, pull them off external drive, nuke them both either in installer or after have installed (and make sure grub put on right disk, , not using old grub on old disk)
