new setup fine, login works, editing or accessing content items - db error - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support

hey,

i running fedora core 3 mysql 3.23.58, php 4.3.9

i got install done , have been able login. however, when try to
edit frontpage item (or content or menu), db error.

any idea going on?

news item save changes though error shows. @ other times,
while logged in admin, error shows whenever try at, say,
the menu manager items.

did check if folder /tmp exists , if, writeable?
