GameBro - A Pi in a GameBoy. - Raspberry Pi Forums

hello, fellow forum users! first project using raspberry pi, , actually, first time working things plastic , circuitry. goal turn old original gameboy portable computer, , gaming system.

image

project goals:

- replace original buttons of 3ds, exception of start , select buttons (probably dsi).
- utilize power switch power on device, , have led indicate on, or low on power.
- replace screen small lcd around 3" wide, although i'm not going picky resolution.
- have screen run via rca or gpio, hdmi lead-out.
- use volume dial , audio jack comes device, replace speaker, , have these functioning normally.
- use powered usb hub power pi itself, having @ least 1 usb lead-out.
- have small usb wifi adapter on top of device, opposite power switch.
- have ethernet lead-out.
- add shoulder buttons somewhere on device (i not sure yet.)
- use cartridge slot load sd card, if possible. (i've ordered gameboy game can rip label off of , take chip out, purpose of fitting hold sd card putting device simaeltaneously slides sd card proper slot.
- remove many components pi can conserve space, directly soldering cords board itself. (i imagine extremely tricky ethernet , hdmi parts.)

general goals:

- have fit neatly within device, without having use bind together.
- make functional , easy use.
- have @ least decent.
- make portable, option plug in charge it.
- prevent overheating quickly.
- keep weight of device nice , balanced.

my current inventory:

- various tools (including heat gun w/ solder, drill, , fine-toothed saw circuits , plastic cutting.)
- powered usb hub fit inside case along pi. (i stole rock band set, nobody plays anymore.)
- small lcd screen took out of digital camera.
- gameboy cartridge
- gameboy
- raspberry pi.
- 8 gb sd card

things i'm waiting (that i've ordered online):

- tri-wing screwdriver.
- wireless adapter.

things need: (fun fact: if need more this, don't know it.)

- power source, (battery, preferrably.) necessary parts , wires. record, know absolutely nothing inverters, know voltage , amprage. can figure out kind of battery need, not how put together. i'm thinking 7.4v 1a or 2a.

now, sounds pretty far-fetched who's never worked on before. i'm hoping feedback , input people interested, , people have done things this.

total amount of money i've spent far on parts $28, , have spend $81.40 rest of parts know get. that's not counting battery , other things have yet buy, , it's not counting cost of tools (around $100 required, far). altogether, thing cost $200 make.

so, yeah. there is. right i'm waiting important parts arrive, while figuring out power source.

a ambitious project , wish luck it. think find space in short supply.
if haven't seen already, @ least 1 other person has done similar: http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpbb3/viewt ... 83#p158083
might provide little advice on power side of idea of how tight space be. google show other attempts.
couple of points on things mention:

-to have screen run via hdmi or rca, have lead-out both of these.
recommend have screen run off of rca , don't try having lead-out. haven't looked @ them, know @ size, rca resolution have , trying have run off of still able plug else difficult. also, think pi output hdmi (though may incorrect), use screen when not plugged else want.

- use powered usb hub power pi itself, having @ least 1 usb lead-out.
pi won't able run off of hub have plugged pi; pi use power can supply , won't work.

think lot of ideas such usb port opposite power wi-fi dongle , having sd slot on top of gameboy tricky of them, there extenders every connection out there. once again, main problem space (and wires everywhere).
if make progress, don't forget post. there plenty of people can if stuck electronics.
finally, 1 idea power supply: http://learn.adafruit.com/solar-charging-handbag
ignore solar panel, , replace solar li-po charger one: https://www.adafruit.com/products/259, idea of should work. connect pi's power via usb on mintyboost, can use li-po battery , charge via usb jack on charger board. recommend checking either these forums or adafruit ones ensure mintyboost can run pi. says can 500 ma, might want double check.
