Suggestion for potentially useful hardware addon - Raspberry Pi Forums

i don't know if else find useful, there particular hardware add-on see pi. in basic form, connect sd card slot , on other side present usb port external hard drive connected. purpose allow hard drive emulate sd card boot , run raspberry pi entirely off hard drive, without needing sd card @ all.

but, if designing thing (which not have ability do) make small cube following:
  • power input
    short (6" or so) power cable supply power raspberry pi (so don't need 2 power supplies)
    sd connector plug - plugs sd card slot on pi
    2 4 sd card slots
    2 4 usb ports connection of external hard drives
    additional connectors might needed make work (to receive command raspberry pi).
idea when boot pi, rather booting 1 usb card connected, select boot of connected sd cards or usb drives. there menu allowing pick 1 want, or set default one. in addition, device permit "backup mode" 1 sd card backed or usb drive @ scheduled time or manual invocation user, or 1 usb drive backed another. i'm more envisioning perhaps way have "failsafe" system connect 1 or more sd cards , if 1 fails, device switch backup , maybe send email or other type of alert user.

2 main applications see this:
  • the user wants use raspberry pi multiple purposes and/or multiple operating systems, , wants keep each separate

    raspberry pi runs unattended , failure of sd card bad thing. give options card @ regular intervals , switch card or drive if main sd card fails.
reason mention power cable stub don't need have 2 power sources, important in remote application (for example) trying power off of solar cells or other power source.

suppose make more useful include standard usb hub (particularly if need connect 1 of pi's usb ports obtain control signals - know next nothing hardware don't know if best done via usb port or pins on raspberry pi) , make nice all-in-one extension device, you'd need mark conventional usb ports , ones hard drives emulating sd card (assuming that's possible).

anyway throwing idea out there. i'm ignorant of hardware know or isn't possible, have given idea of had in mind. , suggestion in case wants design such thing, because i'm not capable of doing it.

aside fact such device painfully slow--what usb 2.0 being deal faster sd interface--if 1 go route of doing conversion sd interface, why not sd-to-sata , *then* connect hdd or ssd directly instead of going through interface conversion?

add-on devices i'd see...
1. device used base of pi case contained power supply , usb hub
2. power supply tester in form of small circuit board full sized usb connector on 1 end, mincr-usb connector on other, load resistor value draw 1a, , pair of test points hold meter probes in place. 'good/bad' led indicator "nice have" feature, isn't essential. cost should no more $10.

Crossfader Arduino Tutorial

hello i'm super newb please don't bash me much. i'm using led's , i've connected them correctly (finally) , wondering why program here ( http://www.arduino.cc/en/tutorial/colorcrossfader ) doesn't work? say's haven't declared crossfade. read directions on top , said crossfade needs used list order of colors. isn't declared in main part (void loop() )? or need declared before? nevermind void on bottom , needed before voidloop. lol anyways playing rgb led's wondering if has specific way of making them fade in , out different colors?
